Current deadline
For equipment installed between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026, the rebate form and supporting documentation must be received by February 28, 2027.
The basics
- The heat pump must be installed by a contractor in the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network. Mass Save recommends getting proposals from at least 2 to 3 contractors.
- Equipment must meet ENERGY STAR Cold Climate and be on the Mass Save Heat Pump Qualified Products List.
- Rebates are based on equipment size in tons: AHRI cooling capacity divided by 12,000 BTUs.
- Beginning October 1, 2026, applications require the serial number and a clear photo of the equipment nameplate for each outdoor unit.
- Mass Save says to allow eight weeks for rebate processing. Some projects are selected for random inspection.
Three rebate types (2026)
| Rebate type | 2026 amount |
|---|---|
| Whole-home | $2,650 per ton, up to $8,500 |
| Partial-home | $1,125 per ton, up to $8,500 |
| Basic | $250 per ton, up to $2,500 |
| Income-based enhanced | Up to $16,000, or up to no cost through Turnkey Services |
- Whole-home: heat pumps are the sole source of heating and cooling. The home must be sufficiently weatherized and a Whole-home Heat Pump Verification Form completed and signed.
- Partial-home: an existing boiler or furnace stays in place to supplement the heat pump. A $500 weatherization bonus and a $500 sizing bonus are available if you qualify.
- Basic: for projects not displacing fossil fuel or electric resistance heat, such as replacing an existing heat pump or central AC, or conditioning a new addition.
